4th Annual Mayors Day of Recognition for National Service - April 5, 2016

Posted on April 5, 2016 at 9:41 AM by Communications Department

Newport News Mayor McKinley Price joined Hampton Mayor George Wallace and mayors from4-5 mayors_SC throughout the country to spotlight the impact of national service and thank those who serve on this 4th Annual Mayors Day of Recognition of National Service. Mayor Price has proclaimed today, April 5, as National Service Recognition Day in the city of Newport News and urges all residents to recognize the positive impact of national service in our county. In honor of the day, several service projects are running simultaneously across the peninsula with volunteers assisting at the Foodbank, Virginia Veterans Corps, Foster Grandparents, and the Boys & Girls Clubs.

Every day, in cities across America, national service is strengthening communities. Whether supporting food banks and homeless shelters, restoring city parks, building homes, managing community volunteers, providing health services, or tutoring and mentoring students, national service members help mayors tackle tough problems. As solution-focused local elected officials, mayors understand the key role citizens play in meeting community needs. Last year, 2,786 mayors representing more than 150 million citizens participated in the third-annual event.

This initiative is being led by the Corporation for National and Community Service (CNCS), along with Cities of Service and the National League of Cities. CNCS annually engages more than four million citizens in service at 70,000 sites across the country.
