Drug Take Back Day is Back in Newport News

Posted on October 13, 2016 at 8:15 AM by Communications Department

Have unused or unwanted prescription drugs sitting recycle_SCin the medicine cabinets? Bring them on Saturday, October 22nd from 10 AM to 2 PM on National Prescription Drug Take-Back Day. The Newport News Police supports the Drug Enforcement Administration’s initiative to provide a safe way for the public to conveniently and responsibly dispose of old or unused prescription drugs.

Drop off locations are:
• Newport News Police Department – South Precinct, 3303 Jefferson Avenue
• Newport News Police Department – Headquarters, 9710 Jefferson Avenue
• Newport News Police Department – North Precinct, 368 Deshazor Drive

While one goal of the program is to educate the public about the potential for prescription drug abuse, another is to promote proper disposal to protect our waterways. When medications are poured or flushed down the drain they can become contaminants when the treated wastewater is released back into our local waterways. Wastewater treatment plants are not designed to remove medications from the water they treat.

At a Drug Take Back event earlier this year, the Newport News Police Department collected a total of 442 pounds of unwanted prescription drugs.
