City Jail Renovations Complete

Posted on October 13, 2016 at 8:16 AM by Communications Department

Ribbon Cutting Scheduled for Friday

Sheriff Gabe Morgan is cutting the ribbon to officially open the newly-renovated first floor of the Newport News City Jail. The public is invited to the ceremony taking place at 9 AM Friday, October 14, at the City Jail, located at 224 26th Street. Demolition began holding cell_SCin February 2015, and improvements made under the nearly $2 million contract include a new, state-of-the-art booking area with additional fingerprint stations and updated holding facilities for detainees; covered parking and an additional sally port for police officers dropping off suspects; and moving the Magistrate’s Office to its new home at 25th Street and Huntington Avenue in December 2015.

Sheriff Morgan says the changes will enhance community safety, in part, because officers will be able to get back on the street sooner. For visitors and family members of detainees, there is now a waiting room with seating, restrooms, and vending machines.
