Open and Transparent Access to the City Budget

Posted on April 1, 2016 at 4:25 PM by Communications Department

Have you ever tried to find the answer to a City budget question without sifting through volumes of paper or trying to find the right department to ask? The City of Newport News has made the process easier for everyone. In 2015, the City developed an Open Budget Portal in partnership with OpenGov to provide a transparent, easy way to view the city’s revenues and expenses. This enables a citizen to conveniently search for budget information, based on specific areas of interest. 4-4 budget 2_SC

The portal is available online on the City of Newport News website. The user-friendly site includes historical annual budget data as well as current year-to-date totals that are updated monthly. The Open Budget Portal has been updated to include the FY 2017 City Manager Recommended Budget. This data can be sorted or filtered to answer budget (both revenue or expenditure) questions. All budget information for City functions is contained in the Open Budget Portal, with the exception of the School Division.

The Budget Portal is an exciting, transparent way to for residents to look as the budget and4-4 budget_SC develop a better understanding of the City of Newport News' financial obligations. Everyone; citizens, elected officials and internal staff have access to the same information encouraging conversations and participation in the budget process from the same perspective as others.
