Program Helps Students to Start Their Own Business

The Virginia Peninsula Chamber of Commerce is currently accepting applications for its Young Entrepreneurs Academy (YEA!). The program teaches high school and middle school students how to start and run their own business over the course of a school year. Open to students across the peninsula, classes begin on October 25 and will meet every Tuesday from 4:30-7:30 PM at the ODU Peninsula Center in Hampton. Students must complete an application and pay a $20 application fee.

In the program, students have the opportunity to meet with local entrepreneurs and develop the skills necessary to launch their own businesses. Students work with local business professionals to learn how to write a business plan which are then crafted into pitches that students give to potential investors. Once a business plan is completed, students will receive real money from investor level program sponsors to get their venture off the ground within a month. The program concludes with the young entrepreneurs selling their product or service to customers at the end of the program’s trade show coordinated by the Chamber.
