Newport News Police Officers Receive MADD Awards

Recently, five Newport News police officers were recognized for their contribution to reducing impaired driving in our City over the past year. The Mothers Against Drunk Driving Awards ceremony honored law enforcement officers who have made a significant number of drunk and drugged driving arrests, are involved with Driving Under the Influence (DUI) Sobriety Checkpoints, conduct education and training programs and have received specialized training in Driving Under the Influence enforcement. Officer Christina Ehasz made 18 DUI arrests. Officer Ehasz is highly motivated and works hard to keep the streets of Newport News safe from impaired driver.

Officer Daniel Akaratovic made 20 DUI arrests. Officer D. Akaratovic has been on patrol just over a year and has worked several DUI patrols to help combat impaired driving.

Officer Jacqueline Merriman made 14 DUI arrests. Officer Merriman is breath test certified by the Department of Forensic Science and has participated in several DUI patrols. She also serves as a Field Training Officer for the Department and teaches new officers the importance of DUI arrests and taking drunk drivers off the streets.

Officer Jeffrey Imgrund made 57 DUI arrests. Officer Imgrund is a proactive officer who was awarded the 2015 Greater Hampton Roads Top Cop Award for the Newport News Police Department. Officer Imgrund also serves as an Intoxilyzer operator and has led the Newport News Police Department in DUI arrests in 2014 and 2015.

Officer Zachary Lyons made 16 DUI arrests. Officer Lyons participated in one sobriety checkpoint and in two DUI patrols and remains dedicated to pursuing drunk and drugged drivers.
