Registering to Vote
The deadline to register to vote in the upcoming general election on November 8th is 5 PM on Tuesday, October 17th. To be eligible to register to vote you must be a citizen of the United States, a resident of Virginia, and at least 18 years of age by Election Day. Citizens can register to vote online, in-person or by mail. Already registered? Review your registration information, find your polling place, and see what will be on your ballot on the Virginia Department of Elections’ website.

Absentee Voting
Registered voters who will be away from Newport News on Election Day or who are unable to go to the polls due to a disability may vote by absentee ballot. Eligible voters may vote in-person prior to Election Day or apply to have an absentee ballot mailed. Applications for absentee voting are available by phone, email or online. The deadline to request an absentee ballot by mail is 5 PM Tuesday, November 1st. The deadline to vote absentee in-person is 5 PM on Saturday, November 5th, and can be done at either of the following locations:

City Hall, 2400 Washington Avenue, 6th Floor, Mon – Fri 8 AM – 5 PM
City Center, Fountain Plaza II, 700 Town Center Drive, 2nd floor, Tues & Thursday 8 AM – 5 PM

Both locations will also be open 9 AM – 5 PM Saturday, October 29th and Saturday, November 5th for in-person absentee voting.

Working the Polls
Assistance is needed to help make Election Day run smoothly for everyone. Election officers are needed to work the entire day, from 5 AM until all tallies have been completed, and will be paid for their service. Duties include setting up voting equipment, preparing the polling place, processing registered voters, tallying results, and closing the polling place. Officers must be registered to vote in Virginia, have good people skills, and pay attention to detail. Elected officials and those who work for an elected official cannot serve as an officer of elections.

For questions regarding voting in Newport News or to work the polls, contact the Voter Registrar’s Office at 757-926-8683 or vlewis@nnva.gov.
