Celebrity Night Kicks Off Child Abuse Prevention Month

Posted on March 31, 2016 at 4:27 PM by Communications Department

April is National Child Abuse Prevention Month and the Newport News Child Advocacy4-1 CAP month_SC Team (NNCAT) is working to raise awareness and educate the public about abuse prevention. On Thursday, April 7th, from 5 PM to 10 PM, NNCAT will host an awareness event with a Celebrity Night at Salsa’s Mexican Grill in City Center. Local celebrities will spend the evening serving great food and 15 percent of proceeds collected will support child advocacy efforts. Celebrities who have committed their time include Delegate Marcia Price, Myeva Hurte (a 2016 Virginia State Finalist for the National American Miss Pageant), Vice Mayor Rob Coleman, Miss Virginia Desiree Williams, Councilwoman Dr. Patricia Woodbury, Chief of Police Richard Myers, and Deputy Fire Chief Ken Lay.

Last year Newport News Department of Human Services evaluated more than 1,500 cases for various types of child abuse, including medical neglect, mental abuse/neglect, physical abuse/neglect, sexual abuse, and substance exposed infants. Programs such as Healthy Families and Parents as Teachers, and the Parenting Education division of the Department of Human Services are working hard at increasing parenting skills and decreasing the likelihood of child abuse and neglect.

NNCAT is a non-profit, multi-disciplinary team of human service professionals and citizens who advocate for the early detection, comprehensive treatment and community-wide prevention of child abuse and neglect and child sexual abuse.
