The Newport News Green Foundation will host their annual fundraiser Party at the Pond on Wednesday, September 21. The event supports green space projects and Green Foundation property beautification throughout Newport News. The barbecue-themed event runs from 5:30 to 8:30 PM and features food, drinks, dancing, a silent auction and the presentation of the 2016 Green Awards. Guests can bid on a wide variety from items from original art pieces by several local artists as well as tickets to the Yorktown Wine Festival and other local events
The Green Awards recognizes businesses and other establishments across Newport News that are making a visible difference in the quality of life and beauty of the city by planting and maintaining landscaping that enhances the beauty of Newport News and the preservation of local greenery. The Green Awards will presented to the following businesses this year: From the South District: Hornsby Tire and Service Center, From the Central District: Smoke BBQ Restaurant and Bar, and From the North District: Warwick Forest Retirement Community. New this year, the Board of Directors has authorized two additional awards, the Community Maintenance Award and the People's Choice Award. The Community Maintenance Award recognizes a past Green Award recipient for continued efforts to maintain their landscape and visually enhance the city. It is being presented to Riverside Regional Medical Center. The People's Choice award, sponsored by Cannon Virginia Inc., is an opportunity for the citizens to pick their favorite property from the four award recipients through a facebook poll running on their
facebook page from September 12th to the 16th.
To date, The Green Foundation has helped preserve over 25 acres of green space throughout the City. One of the most notable spaces is the Chatham Trail property located off of Bland Blvd and Chatham Dr. This property was their first opportunity to not only preserve a green space, but also turn it into usable recreation space for citizens to enjoy.
