Increasing Available Housing – Connecting Landlords to Tenants

Posted on September 13, 2016 at 8:18 AM by Communications Department

Landlord Partnership Event September 29th

The 3rd Annual Landlord Partnership event will be held Thursday, September 29 from 6:00 to 7:30 PM at the South Morrison Family Education Center, 746 Adams Drive in Newport News. Lower and middle peninsula landlords can learn about accessing multiple funding sources, locating tenants with wrap around services, connecting with community-based partnerships, and more. The event is hosted by the Greater Virginia Peninsula Homelessness Consortium. The consortium is looking for landlords who have available properties to rent to tenants with some extra financial support. Interested landlords need to register by calling 757-369-6830 by September 21. houses_SC

Homelessness on the Peninsula is showing a declining trend from 736 in 2011 to 464 in 2016, according to Point in Time Counts conducted by the Consortium. However, in 2016, the Point in Time Count indicated that nearly half (222) of the homeless were in Newport News. The Point in Time Count is an unduplicated count of persons who are experiencing homelessness, whether sheltered or unsheltered during a specific 24 hour period, once a year.

The Greater Virginia Peninsula Homelessness Consortium is a regional body comprised of six separate political jurisdictions: Newport News, Hampton, Poquoson, Williamsburg, James City County, and York County. This vigorous and collaborative entity is open to any and all agencies, programs, and individuals interested in working to prevent homelessness on the Virginia Peninsula.
