Support Sustainability Through Recycling
The temperatures may be very warm and the sun shining bright but believe it or not, fall is just around the corner. Now is the time to think about preparing lawns and gardens for winter. The Recovery Operations Center on Atkinson Way offers compost and mulch at a very low cost.

These products are made from the thousands of tons of leaves, brush and yard debris collected from Newport News residents throughout the year. Converting these materials into a useful product is a form of recycling which reduces the amount of waste deposited into the landfill. The compost is tested by a university lab and is certified by the US Composting Council.
There are two grades of each product: first grind mulch and unscreened compost cost only $6 per cubic yard (a full size pickup truck load); second grind mulch and screened compost cost $8 per cubic yard. Unscreened mulch is available for free to Solid Waste Fee paying residents who self-load.
The Recovery Operations Center is open Monday – Saturday from 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM.
