Downing-Gross Cultural Arts Center is excited to announce the 2016-2017 season,
Reflections: 100 Years of Ella. The season pays tribute to Newport News’ legendary native daughter, Ella Fitzgerald, born in the city on April 25, 1917. The Ella centennial season at Downing-Gross

begins September 2016 and runs through August 2017, with a 4-day Ella Fitzgerald Music Festival in April and special events scheduled throughout the year.
On September 10th, the season opens with a tribute show entitled
I Am Ella. Local vocalists, including Chantae Cann, Michon David, Ymoni Collins, Ahisa Henry, Sonja Bibbs and other talent from across Southeastern Virginia will take the audience on a musical journey through Ella’s most memorable performances. Tickets are $15 and on sale at

Also on September 10th, a free public gallery reception will be held at 6:30 PM in the Newport News Community Gallery. The exhibit,
REBIRTH, features works by artist Jesse Rudales who is celebrating his 10 Year Anniversary as the First Latino Olympic Artist. The event is hosted by actor Tommy Ford, former costar of hit FoxTV show Martin.
