Most homeowners to see no change or slight decrease in assessment

The City Real Estate Assessor’s Office has completed its annual reassessment for next fiscal year and the vast majority of homeowners (96%) will see either no change or a slight decline in their assessments. Reassessment notices will be mailed to all property owners by Friday,3-30 house_SC April 1st.

The reassessment identified a slight overall increase (1.80%) in taxable property value, with is attributable to the industrial, apartment and commercial real estate sectors. The residential sector was essentially unchanged showing an overall modest decline of 0.24%.

Newport News property owners should be on the lookout for a redesigned “Notice of Change in Assessment” as the Office of the Assessor has adopted a postcard format this year. The new look will save the City 14 cents per mailing and with approximately 12,000 notices being mailed to owners whose assessments changed, that equates to roughly $1,680 in savings.

The Real Estate Assessor’s Office has set aside the week of April 18th through April 22nd for meetings with property owners who have questions or concerns about their assessments. The Real Estate Assessor’s Office can be reached at 757-926-1926 or restate@nnva.gov.
