You may have noticed a small blue light installed on top of some traffic signals around Newport News. These lights are used to help with enforcement of red light

running violations. The blue lights are connected directly to the red indication of a traffic signal and can be seen from all directions. A police officer located on the far side of the intersection can view vehicles that enter the intersection after the signal has turned red and the blue light turns on. The officer is in a better positioned to safely pull out into traffic and pull over the offending vehicle.
The blue enforcement lights have been installed at 11 traffic signals throughout the city and will be added at other intersections over time based on enforcement priorities and traffic signal construction projects. The enforcement light program allows law enforcement officers to safely enforce red light compliance, leading to increased enforcement and subsequently to our primary goal of a safer transportation network.
