Department of Juvenile Services Receives 2016 Virginia Rules Grant

Thanks to the Newport News Department of Juvenile Services, 25 young people were able to attend the inaugural Virginia Rules Camp at Newport News Park. The Department of Juvenile Services was one of 14 localities around the state selected to receive a $5,000 Virginia Rules Grant, an annual grant sponsored by the Attorney General’s office to fund community youth summer camps.
The Virginia Rules Camp is a weeklong camp filled with outdoor activities combined with a structured educational program taught by Newport News law enforcement officers and designed to help youth understand the law and how it applies in their everyday lives. Youth enjoyed activities such as nature walks, fishing, paddle boating, attending Norfolk Tides baseball games and looked forward to visiting the Virginia Aquarium and Marine Science Museum and a waterpark.

While each day of the camp was designed to engage the youth Juv2_scin fun and healthy activities, the primary focus of the Virginia Rules Camp is to the provide the participants with an opportunity to have positive relationships with the Newport News police officers who serve in the Community. Several of the Police Department’s Community Resource Officers presented interactive lessons about Virginia's laws and other related topics that are geared to help the youth develop the necessary skills to make sound decisions and recognize the consequences of their actions.
