National Weather Service Testing Instagram as Outreach Tool

With hurricane season approaching and low pressure systems expected to increase in the Atlantic, the National Weather Service in Wakefield, VA has joined Instagram to broaden their ability to provide additional weather-related information.

The National Weather Service Wakefield Instagram username is “nwswakefieldva”, which can be searched on the Instagram app and “followed” to receive future posts by NWS Wakefield. In addition to Instagram posts, NWS Wakefield will continue their tradition of frequent posts and interaction on their Facebook page (NWS Wakefield) and Twitter page (@NWSWakefieldVA).

Wakefield is one of 13 local, regional and national National Weather Service offices participating in a prototype “test” of the Instagram platform to measure its utility for the Service and their customers. During the test period, which runs through November 2, 2016, NWS offices will post weather and other weather-related content. Instagram WILL NOT be used as a primary means to transmit watch, warning and advisory information, but more-so as a supplemental information and sharing social media source.

The National Weather Service’s Wakefield Forecast Office located in Wakefield, VA, is the primary source of weather data, forecasts and warnings for the people in 66 counties and jurisdictions in central & eastern Virginia, Maryland’s Lower Eastern Shore and northeast North Carolina. Join them on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram or visit the NWS Wakefield Office website.
