While people throughout the world have their eyes glued to the intense soccer matches in Rio, the City of Newport News’ Hispanic Advisory Committee is hosting a competition of their own on Saturday, August 20th. The 7th Annual International Soccer Tournament and Community Festival helps to educate the community about available programs and services while people enjoy a day of soccer. The fun happens at Riverview Farm Park located at the intersection of Menchville Road and Riverview Parkway.
The day includes a soccer tournament that begins at 8:30 AM featuring eight teams with players representing Korea, Bosnia, the Newport News Police Department, and a few others. Children ages 7-12 can participate in the free youth soccer clinic taught by players from Christopher Newport University from 11 AM - 1 PM. The community resource festival runs from 10 AM to 1:30 PM. Citizens can speak with representatives and receive information from more than 20 organizations. For those who don’t want to attend the soccer clinic, dance to the music played by the DJ or take advantage of the array of games, bounce house, face painters, balloon artists, and more. There will be plenty of free popcorn and giveaways. Other food will be available from vendors for a fee.
