For the second year, the Newport News Sheriff’s Office

has helped about 50 youngsters get a taste of different jobs in the aviation industry with the Aviation Career Education Academy. The Sheriff’s Office co-sponsored the Academy, which is an education program of the National Black Coalition of Federal Aviation Employees held weekdays at Achievable Dream Middle and High School.
For two-weeks, students learn about airport design, unmanned aerial vehicle operations (drones), aircraft design, air traffic control operations and flying in a simulator. There are also field trips to Fort
Eustis and Newport News-Williamsburg International Airport where students ride in private planes.
“I want them to be excited about the possibility of being in the aviation industry. There’s an entire world short of just looking at planes flying in the sky or taking off,” says Sheriff Gabe Morgan, who is also a licensed pilot. “There are the actual inner workings and the entire systems associated with the aviation industry.”
