Construction starts soon on the Washington Avenue
bridge crossing the depressed Newport News Shipbuilding railroad track near 40th Street. The existing bridge structure has deteriorated and currently the bridge is “posted,” which limits the loads allowed to cross the bridge. The approximately $2.1 million project is set to replace the bridge deck, beams and upper part of the stone abutments.
The bridge demolition and replacement is happening in two stages to minimize the impact to the traveling public. Currently the roadway provides four lanes of two-way traffic. During construction, the roadway will be modified to provide two lanes of two-way traffic (one lane northbound and one lane southbound). In addition, the pedestrian route will be modified to allow for the bridge demolition. The construction is anticipated to take 15 months with contract completion in late Fall 2017.
