Former Gang Member Shares Life Experiences

Posted on July 27, 2016 at 5:30 PM by Communications Department

“Humble and honored I am to be allowed, at the age of 25,D3_Watson_III_Gang_SC to inspire a group of police officers, parents, and social workers on the lure of gangs. Only together can we put an end to the brutal lifestyle that traps thousands of teens,” said Donnie Walton III, a former gang member and now motivational speaker. Known as D3, Donnie spoke on gang prevention to a group of more than 50 parents, police officers, community members, and youth at the Changing the Course workshop at South Morrison earlier this month.

In his “incredibly valuable testimonial,” as described by an attendee, D3 opened his life to the audience, speaking to the loss of his brother to gang violence, his mother to drugs, and his father and uncle to prison. He shared his personal experience of violent victimization and how that event changed the trajectory of his life. D3 also spoke about his grandfather and how one man’s support, encouragement, and values eventually hit home and helped to pull him away from the negative path gang life was taking him.

“Donnie Walton III is one amazing man! Thanks for sharing your story!” said one community member attending the workshop, which was sponsored by the NN Department of Human Services and made possible by the Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention Community Based Violence Prevention grant.
