The Newport News Fire Department has been working with Newport News Public Schools to establish a Youth Fire Academy to educate and train young adults for a career as a firefighter for the City of Newport News. The program will provide each student with educational credit hours towards graduation and will teach the students the basics of firefighting, emergency medical services, and safety. Students will also learn special operations to include hazardous materials, technical rescue, marine rescue, bomb team operations, fire education, fire prevention, fire investigations, fire training and emergency management.
This program will continue to support Newport News School’s mission of preparing all students in the school system for future careers. The students will work in the Youth Fire Academy and be part of a Newport News Public Schools Fire Department Club during their Junior and Senior years. The goal is to have students ready to enter the Newport News Fire Department hiring process shortly after graduation.
Newport News Fire Department and Newport News Public Schools will provide information about the program to interested families at a special meeting and presentation at Heritage High School on a date yet to be determined. Once scheduled, this article will be updated to reflect the date and time
