Marathon Moment

3-24-nautical-mile-1The 2nd Annual One City Marathon was a huge success. With the launch of this newsletter, we will feature a series of interesting behind-the-scenes stories that contributed to the many Marathon Moments.

2016 Nautical Mile Family Fun Run Shows Biggest Increase

It was a sea of yellow at the start line of the 2nd Annual Nautical Mile Fun Run as over 1100 participants in three starting waves took off from West Ave at 23rd St. in Downtown Newport News. More than half of them were part of the Newport News Parks, Recreation and Tourism (NNPRT) Youth Program’s Marathon Mania.

One of the stated goals of the Newport News One City Marathon is to promote exercise and a healthy lifestyle -- NNPRT’s Youth Programs’ Marathon Mania does that while encouraging participation in the One City Marathon weekend. The program also includes a reading component.

“Being able to use the Marathon experience to help build healthy bodies and healthy minds is a priority,” said City Manager Jim Bourey.

3-24-nautical-mile-2Beginning in December, kids trained like marathoners —reading 26 books and doing 26 weeks of physical activity—with a goal for the 26th mile to be the One City Marathon Nautical Mile. Newport News Public Libraries donated the books and participants enrolled in the program were rewarded with a free registration if they completed the “training”. With a theme of reading and running to the finish line, Marathon Mania is hoping to foster a life-long interest in both reading and running. The number of this year’s finishers DOUBLED from the inaugural event with 649 participants crossing the finish line side by side with their NNPRT leaders.

Marathon Mania was designed by the Youth Programs leadership to support the healthy lifestyle goal of the Marathon. Taking into account unique needs and age groups at each of the 24 locations, staff set up a combination of reading time and daily aerobic exercise for participants. This year The Daily Press, sponsor of the Nautical Mile, donated newspapers for the reading component—and custom activities were developed for each age group.

The Newport News Youth Program’s Marathon Mania, just like the Marathon, is a city-wide initiative that brings out the best in our residents and in this case —our youngest ones!
