Re-elected and newly elected Newport News City Council members were sworn into office this morning at a ceremony in City Council Chambers. On May 3rd,Tina L. Vick, Dr. Patricia P. Woodbury and Marcellus L. Harris III were each elected to serve a four-year term beginning July 1, 2016 and ending June 30, 2020.

Councilwoman Vick was re-elected to her third term on Council representing the South District. Central District voters re-elected Councilwoman Woodbury who is also serving her third term on Council. Harris is starting his first term as a Councilman and represents the North District. Immediately following the swearing in ceremony, the City Council selected Councilwoman Vick to serve as Vice Mayor for the next two years.
The Newport News City Council is comprised of seven members – the mayor (elected at-large) and two members representing each of the
three districts (South, Central and North). Terms are staggered to avoid a complete changeover of City Council. Elections are held in even numbered years on the Tuesday after the first Monday in May. The Vice Mayor is elected by majority vote of City Council after every election. The next City Council election will be held in May 2018 with Mayor McKinley Price, Councilwoman Saundra Cherry, Councilman Bert Bateman and Councilwoman Sharon Scott’s terms ending making them eligible for re-election.
