The city’s Summer Training and Enrichment Program (STEP), a component of the Youth and Gang Reduction Initiative, has officially helped to employ

520 youth and young adults ages 16-24 for the summer.
Participants were divided into two separate groups to complete an orientation that gave them tips on resumes, finances, and how to be a team player. With orientation completed they began work on July 5.
The participants were assigned to one of more than 70 government, non-profit, or private sector worksites located in Hampton, Newport News, Norfolk and Williamsburg. In addition, STEP was recently featured in the
National Gang Center newsletter.
