Utility Among A Select Few to Receive Directors Award
The Newport News Waterworks Department is among

the first utilities recognized at the annual conference of the American Water Works Association in June for achieving the Directors Award in the
Partnership for Safe Water's Distribution System Optimization Program. They received the award for successfully completing a comprehensive self-assessment of distribution system operations, a significant achievement towards ensuring the delivery of safe, high-quality water to the community.
The self-assessment process included evaluation of distribution system operations and performance; identification of performance limiting factors; and the development of action plans to achieve distribution system optimization, culminating in a peer-reviewed completion report.
The
Partnership for Safe Water is a voluntary, unique, cooperative effort between the United States Environmental Protection Agency, American Water Works Association, Association of Metropolitan Water Agencies, National Association of Water Companies, and the Association of State Drinking Water Administrators. They focus on improving the quality and safety of water delivered to customers of community water systems by optimizing operations.
The objective of the
Partnership for Safe Water is to encourage water suppliers to minimize the risk to their consumers of exposure to pathogenic microorganisms in drinking water through continuous improvement in distribution system performance.
