The City of Newport News offers many different programs and opportunities to citizens who want to be thriving members in their neighborhoods. Founded in 2015, the Creating Responsibility in My Environment (C.R.I.M.E.) Project is a community program sponsored by the Newport News Police Department that promotes partnerships between the citizens of Newport News, the City, and local businesses.

The project connects citizens and community members who assist the City of Newport News in developing its strategic plan for public safety, also known as a Community C.R.I.M.E. Plan. The C.R.I.M.E. Plan is the product of input from not only the police department and the city, but also a broad range of citizens, businesses and community groups.
The project consists of six core goals with groups of citizens assigned to help achieve each goal. The goals are: 1) to build positive partnerships between the community and the police, 2) to strengthen families, 3) to increase measurable success for youth, 4) to strengthen and support neighborhood level leadership, 5) to reduce homelessness, and 6) to increase communications of positive developments in the city.
Newport News residents of all ages are welcome to get involved in this worthwhile project. Group members meet on a monthly basis to develop strategies that will assist them in meeting the goal of their group. For more information on the project and how to get involved visit the
