Teens and young adults, ages 14-20, interested in a career in law

enforcement are encouraged to join the Newport News Police Department’s Explorer program. The free program offers the opportunity to learn about the criminal justice system and participate in training, practical experiences, competition and other activities.
Explorers participate in activities such as crime scene processing, traffic control, 911 Center operations, K-maritime patrol, ride-alongs, and K-9 operations. The program also helps promote personal growth through character development, respect for laws, physical fitness, good citizenship and patriotism.
The Newport News program, Explorer Post 224, meets weekly on Thursday evenings and uniforms are provided. For more information, contact Lt. Smith at 757-928-4285 or
