Newport News Police Department Gives Back to Community

Posted on June 23, 2016 at 9:15 AM by Communications Department

Last week members of the Newport News Police Department ej_mom_nnpd_dogsgave back to a little boy who is bravely fighting for his life. Eight year old EJ Barcus has been battling cancer - Stage 3 High Risk Neuroblastoma with unfavorable histology - since 2013. EJ spent the majority of 2013 and 2014 in the hospital as a result of complications from the cancer, chemotherapy and radiation. While in the hospital, EJ and his mother began to watch the TV show Criminal Minds. As a result, EJ developed a great interest in law enforcement, which has driven his desire to become an FBI agent when he grows up.

Upon hearing about EJ’s situation, members of the Newport News Police Department decided to pay EJ a visit. Master Police Officer Jeffrey Wright, kids_dog_SCSergeant Michael Covey, Master Police Detective Jayson Thompson, Forensic Technician Alison Fox and their four-legged K-9 friends Lacey, Havoc and Murphy all teamed up to visit EJ at his school to present him with a special gift – a tactical vest owned by Forensic Technician Fox’s son. In addition, members of the NNPD K-9 Unit performed a K-9 demonstration for EJ, his mother, his teacher and his classmates. Our hope is that EJ will want to fight crime, the way he’s fought cancer…swiftly and courageously.
