Red Cross Mayor’s Cup Helps Increase Summer Blood Donations

Posted on June 22, 2016 at 8:26 AM by Communications Department

The local chapter of the American Red Cross enlists the help of area cities to drive up the summer donations with the annual American Red Cross Mayor’s Cup Blood Drive Competition. Each year cities throughout Hampton Roads partner with the Red Cross in a friendly competition to increase blood donations that help address critical needs during summer months and hurricane season.

Kicking off June 1st, The Mayor’s Cup Blood Drive is a friendly competition – nearly two decades old – encouraging local government employees to donate blood and raise awareness about the constant need for blood, especially during summer. The spoils and bragging rights are up for grabs and the locality that has the greatest participation percentage from its employees by the end of June is honored with the Mayor’s Cup trophy.

“I can tell you every single person that comes out is a winner in our book, we absolutely look forward to this blood drive heading into the summer months,” said Chris Adams, District Manager of Donor Recruitment for the American Red Cross. “During the summer we often see a decline in blood donations, especially around summer holidays when donors are less available to give,” he explained.

For the past three years, the coveted trophy has been in the possession of Chesapeake. Last year, Newport News volunteers rolled up their sleeves to bring in 155 pints of donated blood. For this year’s campaign, the Newport News campaign has brought in 108 pints of blood – and the amount continues to grow.

In addition to the Mayor’s Cup Blood Drive, the Red Cross urges eligible donors to donate blood now to help maintain the blood supply around the Independence Day holiday to help ensure a sufficient blood supply for patients now and throughout the summer. Blood donations often decline during the summer months, the need for blood is constant for patients. The need for blood doesn’t decrease – every two seconds, someone in the U.S. requires blood or platelets. Donors of all blood types are needed now. Schedule an appointment to give blood by downloading the free Red Cross Blood Donor App, visiting redcrossblood.org or calling 1-800-RED CROSS (1-800-733-2767).
