Vintage 1941 Pipe Replaced on 16th Street

Posted on June 17, 2016 at 8:44 AM by Communications Department

The Newport News Waterworks Department recently completed the replacement of over 4,000 linear feet of eight inch pipeline and over 80 connecting service pipelines that directly supply water to customers residing on 16th Street in Newport News. The vintage 1941 cast iron pipeline was vintage pipe_SCreplaced with ductile iron pipe. The existing pipeline had a high failure rate that interrupted service to customers when it failed and caused road damage that was costly to repair.

The resulting clean up and disruption to the community after pipeline failures made this pipeline’s priority rise to the top. The design was initiated by the department’s Distribution Engineering section with input from Installation and Maintenance staff. The two branches worked together to develop a design and construction plan that met both engineering and operational needs. The project included an area from Wickham Avenue to the Salter’s Creek Bridge approaching the Peterson Yacht Basin.
