City of Newport News Waterworks Department Supports Water For People

Posted on June 15, 2016 at 4:03 PM by Communications Department

The Newport News Waterworks Department recently spearheaded raising awareness and funds for the water industry’s charity of choice – Water For People. Water For People is an international non-profit humanitarian organization headquartered in Denver, Colorado with a mission to bring safe water and sanitation to four million people in nine countries. They assist people in developing countries to improve quality of life by supporting the development of locally sustainable drinking water resources, sanitation facilities and hygiene education programs.

Newport News Waterworks has raised more than $170,000 in 11 years for the Water For People organization. The local support for Water For People began in 2005 when a Newport News Waterworks Department employee-workplace giving campaign raised over $2,100. The following year, Waterworks invited the local business community to join the efforts in a public event. This once local campaign merged with a statewide campaign that now involves the entire drinking water and wastewater community. At a recent annual fundraising event, Waterworks’ received a generous $1,000 donation for Water For People from the Rotary Club of James City County, who has been a supporter of the organization for several years.

Despite decades of development activity by nonprofits and governments, there are still 1.8 billion people in the world without access to reliable safe water and 2.4 billion people lack access to adequate sanitation. Women and children spend more than four hours walking for water each day, and more than 840,000 people die each year from water-related diseases.
