While there are no plans at the present time for the use of the City Farm property, the City of Newport News feels it is important to ensure that the very old barn on the property is kept in good order. Currently, the barn’s roof is in need of repair. This project consists of repairing damaged roof structure components and replacing the existing City Farm barn roof. It will be completed in two phases, and work will begin next week. The first phase involves repairing the roof trusses and damaged roof overhangs and replacing all missing roof sheeting boards. Roof felt paper will cover repaired roof areas effectively drying-in the barn. Phase two will include removal and replacement of the existing roof shingles with new asphalt shingles. The total cost of the project is approximately $85,000 and should be completed by the end of the summer. City Manager Jim Bourey said, “We wanted to make sure that the decision on what to do with the City Farm barn was not made by neglecting the building and allowing it to deteriorate to point where could not be reused.”
