The Plaza at Jefferson Rezoning Application Withdrawn

Posted on June 8, 2016 at 2:11 PM by Latoya Jefferson

In a letter sent to the City of Newport News today, the attorney representing the developer and the airport has requested the rezoning application for The Plaza at Jefferson be withdrawn. The request was made in order to allow time for the Federal Aviation Administration to act on an approval of the roadway realignment and for additional information to be provided to Council members. The attorney for the developers also indicated that they did not want to ask for an additional continuance, thereby further delaying action on this request. By withdrawing the application, the applicant reserves the right to reapply for the rezoning at a later date. wegmans scaled

The plaza, proposed to be anchored by a Wegmans grocery store, was to be constructed on 33 acres of airport property at Jefferson Avenue and Brick Kiln Boulevard near I-64. The property is currently zoned M1 Light Industrial and City Council approval is needed for it to be rezoned C1 Retail Commercial to allow for the proposed retail development.

Recommended by the Planning Commission for approval in April, the rezoning application first went before City Council on May 10, 2016. At that meeting, City Council continued the vote to its June 14 meeting. It will now not be on that meeting’s agenda.
