Newport News City Manager Jim Bourey has been appointed to serve on the Commission on Fire Accreditation International (CFAI) by the Center for Public Safety Excellence. He will serve as a representative of the International City/County Management Association (ICMA), with his three year term running June 1, 2016 through May 31, 2019. The Commission is governed by an 11-member board representing a cross-section of the fire service industry, including fire departments, city and county

management, code councils, the U.S. Department of Defense, and the International Association of Firefighters. The CFAI administers the Center for Public Safety Excellence’s accreditation program, a voluntary comprehensive self-assessment and evaluation model that enables fire and emergency service agencies to compare service levels and internal performance with industry best practices.
“I was honored to receive an unsolicited request by ICMA to serve on this international commission and very pleased to have been selected,” Bourey said. “Their accreditation program is critical to ensure high quality fire service which saves lives every day.”
CFAI is dedicated to assisting the fire and emergency service agencies throughout the world in achieving excellence through self-assessment and accreditation in order to provide continuous quality improvement and the enhancement of service delivery to their communities. The CFAI process is voluntary and provides agencies with an improvement and validation model to assess their service delivery and performance internally and then provides a team of Chief Fire Officers from other agencies to validate the performance metrics that have been developed in conjunction with industry best practices.
The Newport News Fire Department is one of 220 CFAI accredited agencies, first earning accreditation status in 2008 with re-accreditation in 2013. Learn more about the
