Plans to add bike lane and sidewalk along waterfront
The City of Newport News is now moving forward with a long planned project located in the southern portion of the City along Chesapeake Avenue, the Chesapeake Avenue Bike and Sidewalk Project. The City received funding through the Moving Ahead for Progress in the 21st Century Transportation Alternatives Program for. This project was first identified and recommended in the Hampton Roads Waterfront Parks Plan adopted by City Council in 1994.
The Chesapeake Avenue Bike and Sidewalk Project runs along the Chesapeake Avenue waterfront from the Monitor-Merrimac Overlook to the Hampton city line. Recommendations from residents at a community meeting were incorporated into the design. The project includes narrowing the existing road by adding a bike lane separated from vehicular traffic by a raised median as well as adding sidewalk along the waterfront of Chesapeake Avenue. The project is currently in the design phase with construction anticipated to begin fall 2017. For more information, please visit the City’s Project Status Report
