The Virginia Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) has approved a SLAF funded grant application within the City of Newport News. This 2016 grant of $1,100,880 is for stream restoration along Salters Creek from 35th Street to 28th Street. Salter’s Creek is a natural urban stream through densely developed residential, commercial and light industrial areas and has been degraded by fallen trees, trash and debris, invasive plants, sediment and nitrogen and phosphorus pollutants associated with fertilizers and pesticides. The project will include cleaning and restoring the stream channel, construction of plunge pools and establishment of permanent conservation areas to reduce the loading of these pollutants through Salters Creek and to downstream waterways.
