Last month the Peninsula Regional Animal Shelter challenged itself to get the most adoptions in one month since the shelter’s opening in January 2015. The number to beat was 146 adoptions, and the shelter was able to reach their goal with a grand total of 160 adoptions during the month of April.

The shelter staff challenged themselves and the shelter staff is happy to have broken this record; however, with kitten season already in swing and strays in abundance, they still have many animals in need of homes. Also, lots of animals tend to go missing around Memorial Day, the 4th of July and Labor Day. Make sure outside animals are safe inside during the hot weather, storms or firework shows, and gates and fences are secure. Increased rain showers can make it easier for pets to escape from yard. Make sure all tags are in place on pets and microchip information is up-to-date.
The shelter is open for adoption visitors Wednesday through Monday, 11 AM to 5 PM, and is located at 5843 Jefferson Avenue in Newport News. For further questions about adoptions or claiming your lost pet, call 757-933-8900.
