Earlier this year, the Newport News Department of Human Services began an initiative to promote the use of Virginia’s online portal for benefits and services known as
CommonHelp.

Through CommonHelp, citizens can screen for eligibility, apply for and renew benefits, and report changes all from the comfort and privacy of their home or from any internet access they have available to use. The portal also allows citizens to easily access other service web sites such as the Virginia Department for Aging and Rehabilitative Services, the Department of Health, 2-1-1 Virginia, Social Security and other agencies and partners.
The availability of 24/7 online services increases accessibility for customers, as well as the convenience of connecting with the agency. Computer kiosks with access to
CommonHelp are available at both Department of Human Services locations (6060 Jefferson Avenue and 368 DeShazor Drive) and reception staff is available to assist citizens with the online application process.
