Deadline approaching to register
It’s General Election time again and the opportunity for citizens to elect their next representatives. On May 1 Newport News registered voters can cast their ballots for the office of the Mayor, and for City Council and School Board members from all three districts – North, Central and South.
The deadline to register to vote or to update an existing registration is Monday, April 9. You can register online, in person or by mail. To be eligible to register to vote in Virginia you must be at least 18 years old, a U.S. citizen, and a resident of Virginia. You can be registered and plan to vote in another state or currently declared mentally incompetent by a court of law. If you have been convicted of a felony, your right to vote must have been restored.
Registered voters who will be away from Newport News on Election Day, or who are unable due to a disability, may vote by absentee ballot. Eligible citizens may vote in-person prior to Election Day or apply to have an absentee ballot mailed to them. For information about obtaining an absentee ballot or in-person absentee voting, visit the Newport News Voter Registrar website. The deadline to request an absentee ballot by mail is 5:00 p.m. April 24.
Virginia law requires all voters to provide an acceptable form of photo identification (photo ID) when voting in person at their polling place. For a detailed list of acceptable IDs, please visit the Virginia Department Elections.
