One City Marathon Wrap Up

Posted on March 5, 2018 at 11:20 AM by Communications Department

The 4th Annual One City Marathon is officially a wrap! There were a total of over 2,400 registered runners across all four races and 28 states represented, as well as Puerto Rico, Mexico and Canada. And with the exception of Family Fit and Fun Day being canceled due to high winds, all of the weekend’s events were enjoyed by many thanks to the roughly 700 volunteers that helped make this all possible.

3-5 marathon winnersOn Friday and Saturday participants stopped by Denbigh Community Center to pick up race packets, visit with vendors, receive a free running analysis and more at the Health and Wellness Expo sponsored by Riverside Health System. Saturday evening participants and their families gathered at Boathouse Live for the Pasta Dinner, also sponsored by Riverside. Guests enjoyed mingling with one another while carbo-loading for the next day.

Race day was a little chilly with brisk winds, but that didn’t stop the runners from coming out in full force! Will Christian was the first male finisher of the marathon and set a new course record with a time of 2:22. Alexandra Niles was the first female finisher of the marathon and qualified for the 2020 Olympic Marathon Trials. The first place male and female finishers for the Maritime 8k were Garrett Kenyon and Maddie Ivy. Bruce Newman finished first in the Marathon Hand Crank and "Bash Brothers and an Old Man" was the first relay team to finish.

After the top finishers crossed the finish line, the Nautical Mile fun run began with participants of all ages. After racers received their medals they were greeted with music, food and drinks at the One City One Celebration! There the top finishers received their awards and Denbigh High School was named winner of the Home Town Spirit Award!

Congratulations to all of the runners and thank you to all of the volunteers! We will see you next year! For more photos and results, please visit the One City Marathon Facebook page or the City of Newport News Facebook page.
