Newport News Public Library announces the 2018 Poetry Contest as part of Tidewater Reads. Tidewater Reads is a literary collaborative between seven Tidewater Region public libraries, the Muse Writing Center and the Suffolk Art League in an effort to promote the value of reading and to build a sense of community by engaging the residents of the Tidewater Region in talking about the same book at the same time. This year features works by Kwame Alexander, poet, educator, and New York Times Bestselling author.

The Tidewater Reads Poetry Contest is open for entries of original works today, February 26 through Friday, March 16. There are five age categories from kindergarten to adults and the top three poems from each participating library will move on to be judged in the Tidewater Reads regional competition. Prizes will be awarded for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place winners of each age division at 3 p.m. on Saturday, April 28 during the
Kwame Reads event at the Slover Library in Norfolk. Winning entries will be compiled into a digital poetry book made available on the
Tidewater Reads website.
Visit any Newport News Public Library branch beginning today, February 26, for a copy of the poetry contest entry form or download it online at
www.tidewaterreads.org/poetry-contest. Entries are due at the Circulation Desk of any Newport News Public Library branch by 5 p.m. on Friday, March 16.
