Since January 8, every Monday we’ve been bringing you various spotlights on One City Marathon runners and participants. Now that race day is almost here, we decided to bring you a feature every day this week! We hope these spotlights bring you insights and personal perspectives on why people participate in the marathon and what it means to them. Whether it's running, volunteering, cheering or sponsoring, every participant in the One City Marathon is important.
Meet Andy Stein, Director of the City of Newport News Information Technology Department and coordinator of the Tango Marathon. Stein and his wife have been practicing noncompetitive Argentine Tango for many years, even teaching free lessons and holding free social dances every week. In 2014 when the city was looking for participation in the first marathon, Stein proposed to organize a Tango Marathon in Newport News to complement the One City Marathon.
A Tango Marathon is a noncompetitive event where the group as a whole dances for extended hours during the day and into the late night. The idea took off and this year will be the 4th edition of Stein’s Tango Marathon. Since its beginning they have grown in number of participants and have donated over $3,000 to various OCM Charitable Partners.
