Classes begin in March

2-20 cert logoThe Newport News Division of Emergency Management is now accepting applications for the upcoming Community Emergency Response Team course. New this year with this award-winning program is the opportunity to learn basic first responder skills in a blended learning environment.  Students will complete online prerequisite modules at their convenience which will qualify them to continue their training with the pros in an immersive and hands-on environment over several weeks. The City of Newport News is the first jurisdiction to use this innovative approach that reduces the amount of time students spend listening to lectures and increases learning core capabilities through skills assessments, drills, and simulated emergency scenarios.

The online portion of the class will begin on March 1, and students will have until March 12 to complete the eLearning. Upon successful completion of the online course, students will attend classes each Thursday for five weeks, beginning March 15 from 6 p.m. – 9:30 p.m. at South Morrison Family Education Center located at 746 Adams Drive, Newport News. Class topics include fire suppression, medical operations, search & triage, transports, etc. and include both lectures and drills. The class culminates with an exercise on April 14, and 100% attendance is required.
