During February, the
Mariners’ Museum is honoring Black History Month with interactive programs that focus on the influences and contributions of Africans and African-Americans in the nautical world. African and African-American maritime history and culture will be shared through storytelling, special performances, lectures, and guided Museum tours.
- Beyond the Shackles: The Role of African-Americans During the Civil War
Saturday, February 10th, 10 a.m. – 12 p.m.
- The African and African-American Presence in the Maritime World
Sunday, February 11th, 2 p.m. – 4 p.m.
- Storytelling with Dylan Pritchett
Saturday, February 17th, Storytelling at 1 p.m. and 2 p.m.,
- Anansi and Other African Folktales
Saturday, February 25th, at 1 p.m.
The Mariners’ Museum is located at 100 Museum Drive in Newport News. Black History Month lectures and workshops are included free with Museum admission. The Museum is open daily Monday – Saturday 9:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. and Sunday from 11:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. Please visit the
