Newport News Public Schools and the Newport News Fire Department have worked together to establish a Youth Fire Academy at Heritage High School that launches

at the start of the 2016 - 2017 school year. The Youth Fire Academy will be a 14 week program that will include CPR and First Aid certification, firefighting demonstrations and simulations, field trips, hands on activities, leadership development and community engagement.
Upon successful completion of the 14-week class, students will be eligible to move to the advanced phase of the Youth Fire Academy. The Advanced Youth Fire Academy includes job shadowing, ride-a-longs with the fire department, and mentorship by NNFD Firefighters.
