Marathon Mondays

With a little less than a month until the race kicks off, the excitement is mounting for the One City Marathon. Presented once again by Newport News Shipbuilding, this year’s marathon is shaping up to be the most competitive yet with a number of elite runners participating.

Perhaps the most notable of this year’s competitors is Michael Wardian from Arlington, VA.  Michael is a veteran distance runner having completed more than 170 marathons of which he has won dozens, including the Rock & Roll National Marathon in Washington, DC on six occasions.   If that was not impressive enough, Michael has completed more than 70 Ultra Marathons on six continents and The North Pole, 20 triathlons, is a three time United States of America Olympic Trails Qualifier and has been a regular member of Team USA for the 50K and 100K World Championships.

With a personal best time of 2:17, Michael will be difficult to beat but there are a number of other notable competitors in the Men’s Open Race that are likely to challenge for honors.  Coming off a 3rd place finish in the Anthem Richmond Marathon last November, Matt Cheney of Southern Pines, NC hopes to better his 2:23 time. Will Christian of Norfolk, VA is an experienced runner and has won or placed in several of the Commonwealth’s toughest half marathons.  The 2016 Champion, Bryan Morseman of Bath, NY is returning in hopes to better his 3rd Place finish from last year and continue his quest to raise awareness and funds for Spina Bifida, a condition that affects approximately 166,000 in the United States including his youngest son.  And while he will be making his marathon debut, Pol Domenech of Indianapolis, IN is a collegiate cross-country conference champion looking to push the more experienced elite runners.

The competition is no less fierce in the Women’s Open Race.  Marie-Ange Brumlot of Brooklyn, NY is returning to attempt to better her 2nd Place finish from last year. Shawanna White of Columbia, SC returns for a second year as well, also looking to improve her finish time. Joining Marie-Ange and Shawanna are a host of challengers from across the country. Alexandria Niles of Montclair, NJ is looking to run an Olympic Qualifying time and first time One City Marathon runners Marina Martino of Dallas, PA and Rhea Deroian of Raleigh, NC, have additionally been named early favorites.

Presented by Anthem Blue Cross Blue Shield, the Maritime 8K should be a very competitive race as well. Returning Champion, Charlie Hurt of Charlottesville, VA is the initial favorite in the Men’s Open Race. On the women’s side, all eyes will be on Sika Henry of Newport News. Sika won back to back One City Marathons in 2015 and 2016 but this will be her first year competing in the Maritime 8K.

Whether you’re interested in challenging one of these competitors or simply interested in running for pleasure, there is still time to sign up for the One City Marathon, happening March 4! Visit www.onecitymarathon.com for more information.
