One City Marathon Weekend is Just Four Weeks Away!

Posted on February 2, 2018 at 10:52 AM by Communications Department

We are now a month into 2018 and just a month away from the 4th Annual Newport News One City Marathon (OCM) Weekend presented by Newport News Shipbuilding. The race weekend is a week earlier this year, happening Friday, March 2 through Sunday, March 4. Get ready to run, walk, volunteer, cheer or just have a good time because it’s almost here! Each year we continue to come together for the OCM showing that indeed, “We Are One City.” Let’s make 2018 the best year yet!

There are four affordable races you can register for online. Rates increase the weekend of the race so be sure to register early and save money! If you need a little support to get you prepared for one of the races, join an official training team with certified coaches to get you going!

If you don’t plan on running, you’re still invited celebrate all weekend! Start things off at the free, two-day Health & Wellness Expo presented by Riverside Health System. Stop by Denbigh Community Center on Friday from 12-7 p.m. or Saturday from 10 a.m.–5 p.m. to find a variety of fitness and nutrition related vendors, preventative health information, interactive games and training evaluations.

Join the crowd on Saturday from noon to 3 p.m. for a celebration at the One City Marathon Family Fit and Fun Day! Enjoy a range of free activities the whole family can enjoy. The event takes place in the newly developed Brooks Crossing on Jefferson Ave. Then, spend the evening at this year’s pasta dinner, sponsored by Riverside Health System and held at the new Boathouse Live venue in City Center. The event begins at 6 p.m. and tickets go on sale next week at onecitymarathon.com.

And the events don’t stop there! After the races on Sunday, you can party with thousands of your closest friends behind the finish line at One City One Celebration at Victory Landing Park from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Enjoy music, food, runner relaxation areas, games and more.

Another big part of race weekend is volunteering! We love our volunteers and both individuals and groups can sign up to help out online. In addition to the hundreds of happy volunteers, runner feedback tells us that what makes One City such a great race is the number of supporters cheering participants on as they push toward the finish line. We encourage families, neighborhoods, civic groups, businesses, schools, and houses of worship to get out and show their hometown spirit along the entire marathon and 8K courses. Do not forgot the Hometown Spirit Award will be given to the most cheerful group!

Runners and volunteers can also help raise additional funds for our 2018 Official Charitable Partners by participating in the “Run for Free” program or donate directly to our partners – THRIVE Peninsula and VersAbility Resources.

Be on the lookout for more unique announcements, fun incentives and social media campaigns over the coming days. Follow race updates on the One City Marathon Facebook page and Twitter @onecitymarathon.

Now it’s time to get moving! A healthy and engaged community is a strong community. Do not get left behind as we continue to show the world that “We are One City.” For more information, visit the One City Marathon website or contact Flat-Out Events at raceteam@flatoutevents.com.
