Every Monday leading up to the race day, March 4, Newport News Now is featuring various One City Marathon participants and partners. We hope these spotlights bring you insights and personal perspectives on why people participate in the marathon and what it means to them. Whether it's running, volunteering, cheering or sponsoring, every participant in the One City Marathon is important.
In November, the City of Newport News announced that THRIVE Peninsula
and Versability Resources
are the 2018 One City Marathon Charitable Partners. We interviewed both organizations to see what being a part One City Marathon means to them.
1. What is THRIVE doing to participate in the One City Marathon.
This is our first year acting as a One City Marathon Charitable Partner. Through this new role, our organization will participate in the Health and Wellness Expo, the One City Celebration, and of course the race itself! We will be activating volunteers to participate on race day and sending runners who will “Run for Free” benefit our organization.
2. How does your organization benefit from your relationship with the One City Marathon?
THRIVE Peninsula has been serving the community for years, but few people know who we are and what we do. This is a great opportunity to create awareness about the vital resources, education, and support we offer to families who are in financial distress. We hope to recruit people to run on our behalf so it can also be financial beneficial.
3. What is your favorite part of the One City Marathon weekend?
We love that so many churches, organizations, community groups, and businesses cheer on the runners. What a wonderful picture of unity in our city. THRIVE would love to connect with new volunteers, businesses, churches, and community groups who want to partner with us to support local families in need. We have been serving Newport News families since 1973 and we’ve learned it takes a village (or a city) to lift people out of poverty. Come and meet us!
1. How is being a One City Marathon Charitable Partner benefiting Versability?
This is our first year being involved and we are thrilled to be a 2018 Official Race Charity! The One City Marathon is helping VersAbility raise money for our programs that help people with disabilities live, work, and thrive in our community. It is also increasing community awareness of our organization, which will help us create more jobs and opportunities for people with disabilities and allow us to support even more people in need. VersAbility has been supporting people with disabilities since 1953 and serves 1,600 people in early childhood, community living, day support, and four diverse employment programs.
2. What do you think the One City Marathon brings to the community?
The One City Marathon brings a sense of community and excitement to not only Newport News, but Hampton Roads. In addition to the Marathon, there are other races and the Celebration, so people of all ages and abilities can be a part of the excitement that’s throughout Newport News. The Marathon connects so many different people and brings neighbors together.
3. What part of the One City Marathon weekend are you most looking forward to?
We are excited to meet runners and celebration guests. Many members of our team are planning on lacing up their running shoes to participate in the Marathon or 8K, including a gentleman with disabilities in one of our work programs who is already training for the One City Marathon. Members of our team who can’t run are planning on cheering on the racers and volunteering at the Celebration. We look forward to being a part of this special day in Newport News and adding to the fun!
