Posted on May 13, 2016 at 8:27 AM by Communications Department

The Newport News Police Department is currently accepting 5-13 CPAY photo_SCapplications for the Citizen Police Academy for Youth program for teens between the ages of 14-17. The four-day program designed for youth who desire to learn more about police operations will begin on Monday, June 27, through Thursday, June 30, 2016 running from 9 AM – 5 PM each day. Youth who wish to participate in this academy must have parental permission, complete an application, pass a juvenile background check and be connected to the City of Newport News in some way (live, work, attend church, etc.)

During the classes, Police Department personnel will speak to attendees on various topics pertaining to law enforcement. The sample curriculum covers a wide range of topics, including Forensic Services, When Bullying Becomes a Crime, Teen Cuisine and Sexting. Youth will also tour the Newport News Police Department, Newport News courts, and the Newport News City Jail. In the past, attendees have also participated in traffic stop exercises, toured SWAT vehicles, and viewed K9 demonstrations. For those interested in the program, visit the Citizen Police Academy for Youth website to download a program brochure and application or call 757-928-4295 for more information.
