To address missed instructional time from the snowfall earlier this month, Newport News Public Schools has designated Monday, January 29, a regular school day for all students. The date was originally a Professional Development Day for staff on the 2017-2018 school year calendar.
Friday, January 26, will remain a teacher workday; students do not report to school. Monday, January 29, is the first day of the second semester and is an "A" or "odd" day for middle and high school students.
State law requires all public school students to attend school 180 days or 990 hours in any school year. With the added instructional time on January 29, NNPS will fulfill the state requirement for instructional hours. Through extended learning opportunities including after school instructional programs and Saturday School, many NNPS students benefit from additional learning time.
